From page number ten and onwards, the book captivates her. Five-year-old Ayako isn’t much of a reader, but the pictures of sun, of animal silhouettes and sandy savannahs make her heart race. She shifts closer to daddy on the couch, his strong arm curled around her while he pretends to watch the news.

“Pappa. I wanna go there.”

Daddy nods towards the book. “That’s a lion,” he says, tightening his grip on her. He doesn’t have to say more than that; she smiles, a mirror of sunshine caught in her eyes as they wait for mommy to come home again.
